Soil Horizons provide a service to the professional ecologist by integrating the site conditions of upland restoration to the design, production and planting of bespoke plants.

Soil Horizons have an integrated and holistic approach to solving the problems of erosion and degradation in peatland environments. It is crucial that the problem is approached sympathetically and in tandem with site owners and guardians. We have a four point strategy which consultants can access at any point. We repopulate eroded peatland areas with indigenous species, and ensure that conditions before, during and after planting are optimised for the new plants.

Field Assessment
Our starting point is to develop a close understanding of the soil dynamics of the site. This is pivotal to the successful re-introduction of plant communities and their ability to proliferate.

Information taken from soil analysis, site hydrology, and stability, is applied to the plant production methods.

Bespoke Plant Production
The large scale propagation of plants that are unique to the area can be achieved through modern methods of micro-propagation. Numbers can be quickly bulked up from small quantities of original plants to achieve cost effective propagation compared to traditional methods.

Plants are grown from mother plants sourced from a specific site or location. Local provenance or propagation material adds to the robustness and suitability of the planted material.

Fungal root associations are significant to plants establishing in hostile environments. Work carried out in conjunction with Sheffield University, has developed a technique for inoculating the young plants with the correct fungi for development of such hyphal strands.

Moss Production
A key element of peatland restoration is the reintroduction of sphagnum moss. The development of moss beads that can be dispersed from helicopters brings the potential to recover large areas of eroding peat. Used in conjunction with other techniques such as heather brashing, moss beads can be part of the restoration program for bare peat hags.

Establishment of difficult sites requires plants to be already adapted to the environment prior to planting. Thus provides the opportunity for rapid root growth. Through compost compatibility, pruning timing and hardening off, the new plants are adjusted to the site conditions.

Plants are adapted to low pH during production, and with pruning and extra hardening off they are ready for upland planting.
